Judas and the Black Messiah (SPOILER-FREE) Review

What a great way to kick off the 2021 year! Judas and the Black Messiah starring Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, tackles the true story of the Chicago Illinois' Black Panther Party. When William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) is faced with a 5 year sentence to prison or become an undercover agent for the FBI, he chooses what most people would. What he doesn't know is that he will be forced to spy on Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party. Director of the film, Shaka King does an incredible job accurately depicting the setting and atmosphere of the film. Along with the incredible directing comes the great story telling that boosts the movie to greater heights. Judas and the Black Messiah, is not afraid to get its hands dirty and dive deep into difficult topics that may seem taboo to audiences going in not knowing what to expect. Another aspect of the film that makes it even better is the parallels that come from the Christian Bible. As the title suggests the main characters are parallels to Judas the betrayer and Jesus Christ the Messiah. Although these are not the only biblical references, they are the most prominent. Overall an incredible film that is definitely a must watch!
