WandaVision Series Review (SPOILER FREE)
Image: Marvel Studios/Disney Plus
WandaVision is the first Marvel studios original series on Disney Plus; and since it's the first, many did not know what to expect. Especially with the crazy trailers showing everything from black and white sitcoms, crazy 80s clothing, and even trick or treating, with references to the characters original comic book outfits! It is easy to see how many casual Marvel fans may be turned away from the series. Although there may be a lot going on, once you watch the first couple episodes it is easy to see what the show is doing while still leaving a lot of mystery for die hard Marvel fans to uncover.
One thing the show does at the beginning really well, is moving the story along while adding various hints at a larger overarching plot that draws closer and closer as each episode progresses. Sadly once you reach around the fifth episode or so, the story seems to make a drastic shift. Many things happen at once and fans are left speculating what is going on. One thing Marvel has been really good at in its film is leveling expectations with reality, and unfortunately WandaVision seems to fall short of reaching that balance. Throughout the final episodes audiences expected things to happen that never really did, and with such high hopes shattered viewers were left with a sour taste in their mouths. This is my biggest problem with the show; it seemed as though Marvel knew they were getting our hopes up by using "meta jokes" as a way to acknowledge us viewers, only to knock it down and save those plot points and ideas for future uses and just give watchers a boring regular superhero trope ending. Besides the last few episodes not meeting expectations, the show was a fun watch. The action sequences were incredible, the dialogue was solid, and the fun factor was sup high, but still just felt off.
I know I may seemed bias in what I am saying, and the truth is I kind of am. Marvel has had an incredible record of making one great film after another, and watching this just felt.... sloppy. I really expected more and was excited to see how this would effect the main MCU timeline going further. Although it does push the main MCU plot forward, it just felt so anticlimactic.
